To the People of Eritrea:
I am deeply saddened by the death of my comrade and friend, Minister Ali Seid Abdella. I wish to convey my heartfelt condolences to the family of this Veteran hero, and proud leader, Mr. Abdella.
As Minister of Eritrea, he led our country with the courage and integrity that made our fellow Eritreans what we are today. We are all very proud of what he has done, and his vision of a glorious Eritrea will live on.
I am very grateful to have gotten to know such a great man. When he made his trips to New York City, he did not spend all of his time surrounded by the wealthy upper class citizens such as himself, but instead spent time with me, an ordinary person such as you in fact, he wanted me to address him as Abu Hashim. He refused to spend his time at the Helmsely Hotel but instead, spent the night at my apartment, where we talked all night about the history of Eritrean struggles, his beloved family, and his vision of a better Eritrea. I learned many things from our conversation such as to never compromise our principles.
He was not a demanding man, and was very comfortable without any fancy limo, or security personnel (which he deserved). He was perfectly content with driving around in my little red Honda. I was worried about him in New York without protection, so I said, "If anything were to happen, there would only be me to protect you." He just smiled and said, “Ye-amnelay Yacob, but I have no fear with you here beside me and protecting me.
I am very sorry to hear of the death of such a unique and wonderful man. The loss of His Excellency, Minister Ali Seid Abdella will be a tremendous blow to the country of Eritrea, and most of all, those that knew Minister Abdella as more than a leader. My heart goes out to his beloved wife and his wonderful children. My heart also goes out to President Isaias Aferwerki, who made a brilliant choice in selecting a foreign minister and lost his right-hand man. We can only hope that our future minister will be a man as great as Ali Seid Abdella. We will all cherish the memories of His Excellence, a hero, a friend, a fighter, and a leader. May he rest in peace.
My deepest regrets,
Zelealemawi Kbrin Zkrin NSwuatna
